About This Session

This session explores why autistic people experience higher rates of mental health difficulties and why these are frequently misunderstood or misattributed. It examines the impact of environment, unmet needs, sensory processing, and invalidation on emotional wellbeing, distress, and long-term outcomes.

  • We also do a version of this session aimed around Mental Health in Autistic Young People where we are joined by a young autistic person who discusses their journey.
  • Understand why mental health difficulties are more common experiences.
  • Understand what are the most common mental health conditions that are associated with autism.
  • Identify the role of sensory and emotional regulation.
  • Understand key mental health risk factors.
  • Apply compassionate support strategies safely.
