Proprioception Infographic
Covers the body's sense of its own position and movement. Proprioceptive differences are common in autism and dyspraxia, affecting coordination and balance.
Proprioception is the sense of where our body is in space and how it is moving. Differences in proprioceptive processing are common in autistic people and those with dyspraxia, affecting coordination, balance and spatial awareness.
Common experiences
- Appearing clumsy or frequently bumping into things
- Seeking heavy work activities like carrying, pushing or pulling
- Difficulty with fine motor tasks
- Needing to look at hands or feet to coordinate movement
Practical adjustments
Occupational therapy, movement breaks, access to proprioceptive tools like resistance bands, and understanding that clumsiness is not carelessness can all help.
